HEAR STEVEN GREENHUT DISCUSS THE WAR ON SUBURBIA

Acclaimed journalist and policy analyst Steven Greenhut will discuss his latest book, The War on Suburbia, a compelling examination of how urban planning, government policies, and ideological battles threaten the future of suburban living.

Published by the Pacific Research Institute, this book offers a critical look at how policymakers, environmentalists, and urban planners are reshaping the housing landscape—often at the expense of those who choose suburban lifestyles.

“America’s housing policies should be about expanding choices, not limiting them,” says Greenhut. “The push against suburbia isn’t just about land use—it’s about control, and the people being squeezed the most are working families, young professionals, and retirees looking for affordability and quality of life.”

Greenhut dissects the rhetoric surrounding suburban development and transportation, challenging the assumption that sprawl is inherently bad while questioning whether government-imposed urbanist policies truly serve the public’s best interests. He presents a balanced argument for a market-driven approach that empowers individuals to decide where and how they want to live.

Steven Greenhut is a longtime journalist who has covered California politics since 1998. He currently is western region director for the R Street Institute, a Washington, D.C.-based free-market think tank, and is on the editorial board of the Southern California News Group where he writes a weekly column. He is director of the Free Cities Center, a project of the Pacific Research Institute, where he founded that think tank’s Sacramento-based journalism center in 2009. Greenhut has worked full time as a columnist for the Orange County Register and the San Diego Union-Tribune. He writes weekly for American Spectator and Reason magazines. He is the editor of Saving California, and the author of Winning the Water Wars, Abuse of Power and Plunder. He lives with his wife, Donna, outside Sacramento and has three adult daughters.
